FACTS:<\/p>

  • During the period from July 2013 to July 2017, decisions were issued to establish 21 new prisons, bringing the number of prisons in the country to 66<\/li>
  • According to reports issued by Egyptian human rights organizations, the number of political prisoners increased to about 60,000. Frequent testimonies of victims report about torture in prisons, as well as the accumulation of prisoners in police stations, while the Egyptian government denies these numbers<\/li>
  • While the economic situation in Egypt keeps deteriorating, the number of prisons increased by nearly 30%<\/li>
  • The Egyptian Government justifies its failure to reach budget goals in the sectors of Health, Education and Infrastructure with the budget deficit and the lack of financial funds, meanwhile no detailed reports are being released on the cost of establishing new prisons.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    According to an economic study published by the independent newspaper „Mada Masr“, only 2.2% of the budget was spent on Education in 2019, while Article 19 of the Egyptian constitution states that „the state shall commit to allocating a percentage of government spending for education of not less than 4% of the gross national product, which will gradually increase until it is in line with international rates.“<\/p>

    Only 1.2% of the budget was spent on the Health sector in 2019, while Article 18 of the constitution also stipulates that „the state shall commit to allocating a percentage of government spending to health not less than 3% of the gross<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    A Family Disappears<\/h3>

    \"Omar Abdel Hamid Abu Al-Naja\" and his wife, \"Manar Adel Abu Al-Naja\", along with their infant child, \"Al-Bara\" were arrested in their house in Al-Sa'a Square in Alexandria on March 9, 2019. They were taken to an unknown destination.     Human Rights Lawyer in Jail<\/h3>

    The Supreme State Security Prosecutor decided to renew the detention of prominent human rights lawyer and political activist Mahinur Al-Masry in case No. 488 of 2019.\u2028Mahinor faces charges of terrorism and misuse of social media to spread rumors against the state.\nEl-Masry has been organizing peaceful protests and supports activities for political prisoners, using social media to denounce human rights violations. Often dubbed as a voice of the revolution and a champion of women's rights, her activism covers a wide range of activities. In June 2014, she was awarded the Ludovic Trarieux International Human Rights Prize while being in prison making her the second person after Nelson Mandela to be awarded that prize while in imprisonment. Mahinor has been declared a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    Taxi driver, not a spy<\/h3>

    Egyptian-American citizen Mustafa Kassem died in prison after going on a hunger strike.\nThe 54-year-old was a New York taxi driver, originally from Egypt, who was arrested on a home visit in 2013 on accusations of being a spy and taking part in anti-government protests. He was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2018, after being held for five years without any charges.\nMr. Kassem had always denied the charges against him.\nKassem's brother-in-law Mustafa Ahmed, had previously described conditions at the maximum-security Tora prison, where he was kept, as dire.\n\"The cells are filthy, infested with insects, rodents, and snakes\" he wrote in an op-ed for The New York Times last year.\u00a0\n\"They have no ventilation, sun or light. Kassem and the other prisoners have no access to clean water, a bed, a chair or any books.\"\nThe top US diplomat for the Middle East, David Schenker, described Mr. Kassem's death as \"needless, tragic and avoidable\".\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    Engineering student tortured to near-death<\/h3>

    Hossam Saleh Bastawi, a student at the Faculty of Engineering of the Alexandria University, disappeared without a trace for nearly 45 days after being taken from his home by the police.\u2028A security guard finally took pity on the prisoner and contacted his family: Hossam was batteling death in a national security detention center due to \u201csevere illness\u201d.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    Alaa El-Din Saad is a 56-year-old shipyard worker from Wardian, Alexandria. in Borg El-Arab prison in Alexandria.\u2028He was arbitrarily arrested and placed under charges of vandalism and \u201eactivities against the state\u201c and was sentenced to 15 years.\u2028He died in Borg El-Arab prison from a severe cold, after the prison administration failed to provide warm clothing <\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    Assault, threats of rape, and disappearance<\/h3>

    46-year-old Factory worker Nasser Khalil Mahmoud Mohammed was assaulted in his home on December 23 in a security ambush in Al-Ajmi in Alexandria.\nDuring his arrest, his wife was physically and verbally harassed, partially disrobed and threatened with rape by the police officers.\nUntil today his whereabouts remain unknown<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    Guilty even if innocent<\/h3>

    Samir Bedaiwi is a law student who was arrested on January 15, 2016. He then disappeared for 3 months before his mother found him in Tora, a maximum-security prison for political prisoners.\nSigns of abuse and torture were clear on him. He and 14 others like him were added to the infamous case Nr.108 and sentenced to death without sufficient evidence of their guilt.\nThe charges that the military prosecution presented in case Nr.108 included:\nAttempted murder and murder of prominent law enforcement figures, Joining a group that was established contrary to the provisions of the law to disrupt the provisions of the constitution and prevent state institutions and public authorities from exercising their business and damage to national unity and social peace.\nIn other words, they were all political prisoners.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    Comedian in Prison<\/h3>

    Shady Srour is a 23-year-old Egyptian actor who built his career on social media platforms. In 4 years, He reached more than 8 million followers and 1 billion views. He became famous as a comedian on youtube with his short videos that are sarcastic, witty and socially critical.\nShady was detained in December 2019 and has been since under investigation over charges that he had \u201ecooperated\u201c with the banned Muslim Brotherhood group and published \u201cfalse news.\u201d\nSrour denied any connection with the Muslim Brotherhood in the case known in the media as \u201cal-Safafeer\u201d (whistles), which refers to calls for anti-government protests last March. The secular comedian further asserted that he is against the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood group.\nHe is still in prison.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    Where is Radwa?<\/h3>

    Radwa Mohammed is an Egyptian activist who criticized President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi and his wife in a series of viral videos.\nRadwa Mohamed's videos are very popular in Egypt, where each video can reach thousands of views and is shared on multiple platforms. One of the last videos that she posted sparked the ire of the government. The video was called \u201cHuman rights don\u2019t exist in Egypt\u201d in which she criticized the Egyptian First Lady Intisar al-Sisi for \u201cdoing nothing to address the poverty and major human rights violations\u201d taking place under her husband\u2019s regime.\nRadwa Mohamed was detained at her home on Wednesday, November 12. 2019, and accused of spreading false news.\nHer current whereabouts are unknown and fears for her safety have sparked a viral hashtag - #WhereIsRadwa - on Twitter.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    On Wednesday, January 8, 2020 prisoner Ahmed Abdullah Dabaan attempted to take his own life by cutting his throat due to the inhumane conditions in prison.The prison administration ordered him rushed to the hospital, only to be returned soon after even though he was still in critical condition and had 6 stitches in his neck. The reason for his prompt return was to stop news of his suicide attempt of spreading. Prisoner Ahmed Abdullah Dabaan is in wing number 4.The prison administration questioned Ahmed about his suicide attempt, he confessed that it was motivated by the harsh conditions in prison.A group of other inmates, who were on a hunger strike, protested against what happened to their college. In an attempt to deescalate the situation the prison administration threatened the protesting prisoners with arresting their relatives if they didn’t stop. The prisoners continued to protest in spite of the threats, the prison administration then isolated the protesting prisoners from the rest.As a result, the rest of the prisoners started protesting too by knocking on walls and doors and screaming and demanding for their colleges to be returned. Eventually, after failing to contain the situation, the prison administration returned the prisoners.The prisoners of Al-Aqrab prison beseech the media and the law to investigate this incident and help the prisoners of Al-Aqrab. furthermore, they demand their right for visits and that food and medicine be brought in.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
